HEPA is a type of pleated mechanical air filter. It is an acronym for "high-efficiency particulate air [filter]" (as officially defined by the U.S. Dept. of Energy). An air purifier is essentially a motor with a fan that draws polluted air in a room into the unit and forces that air through different layers of filter. The purified air is then returned to the room repeating this cycle over and over to effectively improve the air quality.
